PEP

In 2003 the HHT (Hotel Housing Trust) decided to donate money to the VMX community in order for them to upgrade and expand their existing crèche. PEP was to provide technical support and manage this project. This included working with the women in designing the new crèche, co-ordinating the respective professionals involved eg. Engineers etc, getting all the necessary approvals in place and construction supervision. The VMX Woman’s Construction collective was appointed to physically build the crèche.

 Instead of building a totally new building due to the limited funds available and because of a lack of unoccupied sittes, the community decided to convert the existing crèche, together with the neighbouring house, into the new facility. After much negotiation, the neighbour agreed to be relocated with the understanding that an identical new house would be erected for her. All these costs had to be factored into the budget and a figure was negotiated with the woman’s construction collective to build the aforementioned house.
